do you know? A plant called sorghum

If you are a person who follows a healthy diet or is highly interested in beauty, you may have heard of the name "sorghum." However, it is still a little-known plant in Japan. In the past, my only options were eating out, junk food, and convenience stores, and I had no connection to a healthy diet, so I was one of those people who didn't know about ``sorghum.' '

"Sorghum" is a member of the genus Sorghum in the Poaceae family that is native to Africa. It is a drought-resistant annual herb that germinates, grows, and blooms, then bears fruit within a year. Approximately 60 million tons of wheat are produced worldwide, but it accounts for less than 10% of the production of wheat, one of the three major grains.

In Africa, it is eaten as a staple food such as porridge and bread, and in recent years it has become popular in the United States and around the world as it does not contain gluten, a protein that causes blood sugar levels to rise, and is rich in dietary fiber that improves intestinal function. It is starting to attract attention as a food.

Kibi 's sorghum has high production efficiency depending on the land and purpose.

The sorghum used at kibi was cultivated by a venture company aiming to create a society where fossil fuels can be replaced with biofuel called binex , and the sorghum can be harvested multiple times a year and can reach over 6 meters in height. It has high production efficiency. We aim to solve global food shortages and climate change by using the grains as food, the leaves and stems as energy, and the carbon dioxide fixed in the roots as carbon credits for different purposes without wasting anything. .

Binex , which cultivates the sorghum used in kibi, receives seeds from the Plant Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo, which has been researching sorghum for many years. We will select and cultivate the most suitable varieties for the current situation, as well as the most suitable varieties as raw materials for food or biofuel.

The newly launched kibi website sheds light on sorghum as a food ingredient, as well as sorghum as a raw material for energy, and provides information that will deepen understanding of binex 's goal of a fossil fuel-free energy society. I would like to continue doing so.
